music-image1We hope you’ve had a great summer, wherever you are! If you’re in the Houston metro area, the fun doesn’t have to stop just yet. Houston has no shortage of free fall concerts and events for singles, couples, friends and families. Take a look at some of our favorite happenings around town –

A Little Day Music! Da Camera of Houston sponsors free lunchtime concerts on the first Wednesday of each month from October through May. The concerts begin at noon and are held in the Wortham Theater Center, 500 Texas Street. Da Camera’s objective is to help make music a part of everyday life for all Houstonians. Check their website for other events.

October 7-10 check out the Houston Poetry Fest.  It’s an annual celebration of poetry and poets, held at the Willow Street Pump Station at the University of Houston – 811 N. San Jacinto. Admission to all of the readings is free and open to all ages.

Murder by the Book, 2342 Bissonnet Street, is a mystery specialty bookstore that has won numerous awards from mystery genre publishers and authors since it opened in 1980. They regularly host book signings and talks by today’s most popular mystery authors. Their guest list is peppered with New York Times Bestselling authors! Jeff Lindsay, creator of Dexter Morgan – American’s favorite serial killer and title character on the hit Showtime series – appears at Murder by the Book on September 8th to promote his new book, Dexter is Delicious. Check the website for details!

Interested in photographs? See “Following Huck Finn” at the Lawndale Art Center from now until September 25th. It marks Mark Twain’s 175th birthday by tracing the path taken by Twain’s character, Huckleberry Finn. Best of all, it’s free!

Discovery Green Park hosts concerts, events and activities all year round. You’ll enjoy reading, crafts, writing, Wii, yoga, movies and more. You can even attend a free bicycle repair workshop every Saturday. Bring your bike and learn how to tune it up and make repairs! Best of all, every Thursday this fall you can enjoy the Thursday Concert Series. See Cyril Neville in mid-September! Check the website for details.

Don’t let the kids feel left out! The first Sunday of every month, visit the Children’s Museum of Houston for free. This extremely popular place for kids 12 and younger features a different activity every day, in addition to the regular attractions.

Enjoy all of these events, stay safe, and stay cool!
